Bisnis.com, JAKARTA — Indonesia’s nickel smelter industry is facing a potential raw material shortfall following this year’s cut in nickel ore production, a development that could spur a fresh surge in imports.
Arif Perdana Kusumah, Chairman of the Indonesian Nickel Industry Forum (FINI), said nickel ore demand is set to rise this year as installed smelter capacity expands, particularly from high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) projects nearing completion and preparing to commence operations. HPAL facilities process low-grade nickel and typically produce feedstock for electric vehicle batteries.
